DEI within PHC

The LSU Panhellenic Council desires to build a community that reflects the diverse membership within each of our chapters. We hope to make our campus stronger through our commitment to promoting an inclusive community by supporting and advocating for women of all backgrounds throughout not only the recruitment process, but their entire time here at LSU. It is our goal that each individual woman is celebrated for her unique identity, perspective, and contributions to her organization and to our entire community. Panhellenic will continue to learn and explore ways to create the most diverse and inclusive environment where all members can feel safe and confident in being themselves.

A Letter from the Director of DEI:

Dear members and Potential New Members,

My name is April Wang, and I am honored to serve as this year’s Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) for LSU Panhellenic. Throughout my term, I hope to promote and protect the unique identities of every member of the Panhellenic community from the beginning of recruitment registration to their active years, graduation, and beyond. As the Chair for the Panhellenic DEI Cabinet, which consists of women representing each chapter within our community, I intend for us to make large strides towards ensuring that all potential new members and members in our organization feel welcomed, appreciated, and understood, fostering lasting change within our community.

Heading to LSU and participating in recruitment, I was hesitant. Before, I thought that because I didn’t necessarily match the stereotypical sorority girl image, I wouldn’t find a place for me to belong and truly feel at home. However, participating in recruitment has allowed me to find community not just within my own chapter, but throughout LSU Panhellenic.

My unique identity has been welcomed and valued.  Nowhere else have I met women who are as inspiring and open to learning, contrary to the stereotypical expectation that I was told going into college. Being a part of this community means being surrounded by sisterhood, seen through the Panhellenic women who see the best in everything, are open to new experiences, learn new things, and are authentically themselves.

"We will all profit from a more diverse, inclusive society, understanding, accommodating, even celebrating our differences, while pulling together for the common good." — Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority alumna.

During my time as Director of DEI, I will continue steps that encourage underrepresented groups, whether race, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, religion, disability, or other backgrounds, to find their home in LSU Panhellenic. Through intentional steps toward inclusivity, women in our community will continue to feel as welcomed and valued as I do.

With love,
April Wang
